Cascara sagrada also known as buckthorn and many other names is a small tree that can be found in North America. The part of the tree that is used medicinally, is the dried grayish-black bark and is usually available in solid and liquid forms. Cascara sagrada has been used for hundreds of years for its medicinal properties.
It is used mostly as a laxative to relieve constipation and is its best-known possible benefit. Like all laxatives, Cascara Sagrada should only be taken when your experiencing constipation and should not be taken for extended periods of time. Long term used can have adverse effects such as liver damage, dehydration, and heart problems.
If taking the supplement, it is considered sage for a one week maximum of usage.
